Some of us will be celebrating the birth of Jesus without our friends and family closest to us. You may have even lost somebody you love this year, and this will be your first Christmas without them.&nbsp;Daniela from Colombia (pictured above) is only 12, and she already knows how it feels to lose somebody&nbsp;close to her. In August 2019, her father, Plinio, was murdered because of his faith.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n    <div class=\"responsive-wrapper\">\n\t\t            <iframe\n                    allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\"\n                    allowfullscreen=\"\"\n                    src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/472543988\"\n                    frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\"\n                    data-gtm-yt-inspected-7530309_41=\"true\" id=\"15261753\"><\/iframe>\n\t\t    <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plinio was a pastor in La Caucana. It\u2019s a dangerous part of Colombia. But Plinio knew that it was part of his ministry to his community to speak out against organised crime and help prevent young people being recruited.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniela\u2019s mother, Alba, remembers the day that her husband paid the ultimate price for this ministry. \u201cI was working in the kitchen with some other women,\u201d Alba says. \u201cPlinio had gone to church to pray. When he came back, he sat and watched the news. It was a very peaceful day.\u201d She pauses. \u201cSuddenly I heard gunshots.\u201d Plinio was shot twice. Murdered in his own home. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n    <div class=\"pull-right-wrapper\">\r\n        <div class=\"cta-box\">\r\n            <div class=\"stat\">Every \u00a342<\/div>\r\n\r\n            <div class=\"description\">could provide a Christmas present for a persecuted child to let them know that their church family loves them.\r\n<\/div>\r\n            <a class=\"btn btn-secondary btn-lg view-more\"\r\n               href=\"https:\/\/connect.opendoorsuk.org\/ireland\/act\/donate\/?donationid=b0ee22df-287e-ea11-a82a-000d3a2cff99&#038;campid=WB0001\">GIVE TODAY<\/a>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Daniela: \u201cI find it difficult when I think about my dad\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some ways, Daniela is like many girls her age. \u201cI like to draw. I feel inspired when I look at the sky and the trees,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen I grow up, I want to be an illustrator.\u201d She\u2019s happy to share these things about her life, but when she\u2019s asked what she finds most difficult, it\u2019s obviously harder to speak: \u201cWhen I think about&#8230;\u201d Daniela pauses, and her eyes fill with tears. She tries again. \u201cWhen I think about my dad&#8230;\u201d That\u2019s all she is able to say.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alba has seen how much the tragic event has affected her children: \u201cMy son [Sebasti\u00e1n] is very expressive. He cries and often says things like, \u2018I don\u2019t want anything to happen to you, because I\u2019d be left alone.\u2019 On the other hand, Daniela is less expressive. She cries a little but doesn\u2019t express her feelings.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n    <div class=\"pull-left-wrapper \">\n        <blockquote><p>\u201cChristmas for me is being with my family.\u201d\r\n<\/p> <cite>DANIELA<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children are often the forgotten victims of persecution. Even if they aren\u2019t directly targeted, the impact of having your parents threatened, attacked or even killed can last for many years. And times like Christmas can really bring home the loss. \u201cChristmas for me is being with my family,\u201d says Daniela, echoing how many of us feel. \u201cI believe that celebrating the birth of Jesus is a moment of joy! Usually we celebrate together as a family; we\u2019ll cook and eat together. I also remember a Christmas that we spent with the church brothers and our family, simply enjoying and talking.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Replacing isolation and grief with joy&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, Open Doors partners were able to take Daniela, Sebasti\u00e1n and Alba to a children\u2019s centre, run thanks to your support. They could have a break, safe from danger and away from sadness and isolation, finding comfort and joy as they celebrated Christmas with other believers. I was really happy to be surrounded by so many loving people.\u201d They spent four weeks there. \u201cI felt good for the first time in a long time,\u201d says Daniela. \u201cI met many children and learned that, although there are difficult times in life, there are also times when Jesus helps us to overcome through people and prayer.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, Daniela had the opportunity to be a child. &nbsp;Daniela also saw the change in her family. \u201cShe saw that she doesn\u2019t have to walk through this time of grief alone,\u201d Daniela says of her mum. \u201cShe felt surrounded by other people. For Sebasti\u00e1n, it was the best experience he ever had! He likes to run and play football, so he invited the boys to play with him at the Children\u2019s Centre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n    <div class=\"pull-right-wrapper\">\r\n        <div class=\"cta-box\">\r\n            <div class=\"stat\">Every \u00a370<\/div>\r\n\r\n            <div class=\"description\">could help the Colombia Children\u2019s Centre provide protection, care and education to a child of a persecuted church leader.\r\n<\/div>\r\n            <a class=\"btn btn-secondary btn-lg view-more\"\r\n               href=\"https:\/\/connect.opendoorsuk.org\/ireland\/act\/donate\/?donationid=b0ee22df-287e-ea11-a82a-000d3a2cff99&#038;campid=WB0001\">GIVE TODAY<\/a>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moving Daniela and her family to safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After seeing how dangerous the area was where the family were living, Open Doors arranged a new house for them in a much safer area. \u201cThis was only possible through the gracious prayers and gifts of our supporters,\u201d an Open Doors worker says. \u201cAlba wants to open a sewing workshop in her home. Daniela and Sebasti\u00e1n are at school and are happy. I was really happy to be surrounded by so many loving people.\u201d\r\n<\/p> <cite>DANIELA<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many families in Colombia are still in danger. &nbsp;In the region where they lived, two other pastors were recently killed by gangs for preaching the gospel. Drug traffickers see the church as threatening their way of life. Many pastors and their families are vulnerable and live with the fear of threats being carried out \u2013 or the tragic consequences, if they already have. &nbsp;Open Doors helps these families by giving them pastoral and psychological support, financial aid and \u2013 in some of the most harmful cases \u2013 a permanent home for children at the Children\u2019s Centre. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You can bring comfort and joy to persecuted children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open Doors believes that every child persecuted for their faith should be protected, provided for and given hope for a better future. In many countries, Open Doors partners provide practical, spiritual and educational support to children \u2013 including the provision of Bibles, training and long- or short-term shelter in dedicated centres. This is crucial for the future of a resilient church.
